When Cree filmmaker Neil Diamond (no relation to the singer), sought to explore the constructed image of Native Americans in film he inadvertently found himself on a journey of self-discovery. After leaving his native Waskaganish, Quebec the filmmaker journeys south to the western plains of the U.S. in search of the Hollywood myth, while discrediting celluloid dreams he was invested in himself. This eye opening film shows us the power of film in developing cultural identity and the lasting effect of those images. Reel Injun received the 2011 Peabody Award for best electronic media and was a part of the PBS series Independent Lens.
